No, Wayne Rooney and his bride-to-be Coleen McLoughlin do not have butterflies in their stomachs but rather they are having a butterfly themed wedding. Wayne and Coleen’s £3 million wedding is to be held in a former Italian monastery on 14th June 2008. Approximately fifty guests will travel to the picturesque hilltop abbey - that is visible only from the sea - for the wedding.
Each guest will be given a hand-made box tied with ribbon and inside that box will be a live butterfly. All the guests will open their boxes at the same time and let the butterflies flutter away across the Italian Riviera. Wayne and Coleen have hired the national monument of La Cervara and its grounds for two days. The inspiration for the live butterfly release came from the rare Two-Tailed Pasha species that feed from the trees in the grounds.
Coleen and Wayne, both now 22, have been with each other since they were teenagers. Coleen has said that the butterflies represent her love for Wayne and symbolise the freedom that they both have to be their own person within their relationship. We know Wayne for his great talent as a footballer for Man Utd and England and Coleen - not only as Wayne’s fiancee - but also for her journalism and television work.
Coleen’s mum’s parish priest will fly out to Italy for the blessing that will be held in the chapel of St Girolamo in the monastery grounds. Although the chapel is consecrated, it has no papal permission as a wedding venue for Roman Catholic wedding ceremonies. Therefore, Wayne and Coleen will actually wed at a civil service in Cheshire a week earlier but will have a blessing in Italy for their big day.
The clifftop monestery is situated between Portofino and Santa Margherita and was also the venue for Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster’s wedding last year. After the wedding the fifty guests will retreat into the abbey gardens where they will dine on the terrace, following on from dinner there’ll be a disco and fireworks. After this, the guests will be taken to a private yacht for further celebrations.
